SathSath initiated it's Street and Theatre Drama programme as a tool for the social reintegration of street children. This programme involves street and school children working together to use drama as a tool to advocate child rights issues to the community. The intermixing of street children and school children is highly valuable, as it enables each group of children to develop respect and understanding for each other. By working alongside school children, street children are exposed to social norms and values, which they generally will not be able to develop in the street environment. The children learn a range of skills – team work, commitment, flexibility, acceptance and time management – which ultimately will play a crucial roll in empowering them to realize their potential as valuable members of society. The children are able to feel the joys of success and pride in their achievements.
As well as directly empowering street children, this programme creates a situation where school children are abele view the street children as their peers. An environment is created where every child is equal, so in this regard the school children are able to develop a positive, empathetic understanding of street children and the complex, challenging lives they face.
SathSath’s Street and Theatre drama has been ongoing since the organization was established in 2000. Since this time, Street children have performed drama productions at numerous locations, and addressed a range of topics related to child rights in Nepal. Recently, the SathSath drama team was awarded third prize in the National Youth Theatre Competition promoting human rights issues to the general public.
