NGO Support

At present, there are 5 main organizations in Kathmandu that provide direct support to street children.

SathSath:

  • Advocacy work, radio program, theatre drama, daytime drop in center, social reintegration, educational training and skill development

CWIN:

  • Advocacy work, daytime drop in center, night time shelter, rehabilitation, educational training and skill development

CPCS:

  • Daily welfare services, including food provision, medical support, night time shelter and the running of a scrap collection center for scrap collecting (rag-picking) children

Saathi:

  • Night time shelter and day time drop in center

Child Watawaran:

  • Health and medical support

Between these organizations, Street children receive reasonable support. However, the fact is that most street children remain trapped in their situation and seldom become part of mainstream society.

Supporting street children is extremely complex, and there are many dimensions to the issues that need to addressed, but one thing is clear – more work needs to be done on advocacy and promoting societal awareness. Without understanding from society it is very difficult for street children to ever become respected, integrated members of the community they live in.
